“To sit in the shade on a fine day and look upon verdure is the most perfect refreshment.”
- Jane Austen
We live in a culture that equates movement with progress.
But the nervous system doesn’t regulate through constant action. It regulates through cycles - activation followed by rest. Without rest, the system never resets.
Physiological research shows that stillness, particularly in calming environments, helps lower heart rate, blood pressure, and stress hormones. The body uses these pauses to recalibrate.
Nature offers stillness without stagnation.
Water flows slowly.
Clouds drift.
Branches sway.
Movement without urgency.
Watching these patterns helps the nervous system downshift, even when we are not consciously trying to relax. The body recognizes the rhythm and follows it.
Stillness isn’t quitting... it is maintenance. And without it, everything else becomes harder.
Journal Prompts
If you are so inclined ... writing about your emotions and needs has been proven to be beneficial in helping to gain peace and alleviate stress. There’s no right way to answer.
What messages have I learned about rest, and how do they affect my ability to pause?
When was the last time my body felt even slightly more settled, and what was happening then?
